Maseru is the capital of Lesotho, as well as of the Maseru District. Maseru is situated on the Caledon River, and on the Lesotho-South Africa border. The name is from the Sesotho word for 'place of the red sandstone.' The city was first established as a police camp in 1869, and became the capital when the country became a British protectorate. The country gained independence in 1966. In 1998 many buildings were damaged by the political uprising.
