Middelburg is situated on the banks of the Klein Olifants River, and was originally established as Nasareth in 1864 by the Voortrekkers. The name was changed in 1872 to Middelburg, indicating the central location between Pretoria and the gold mining town of Lydenburg. The town was also an area for a concentration camp during the Anglo Boer War where 1381 women and children died. Today Middelburg is a large farming and industrial city, and the home of Columbus Steel.
