Clay smelting ovens and ornamental treasures provide proof that centuries ago Sotho tribes in the area also mined copper and iron. From these tribes the Greater-Phalaborwa area developed, and the town itself was established in 1958. Today, the town is largely based on phosphates, copper, vermiculite and iron mining. The weather in Phalaborwa is also pleasant, as the average maximum temperature in winter is only 5 degrees lower than in summer.
