Gansbaai came into being in the early 1880's, as a settlement. Cornelis Wessels is claimed to be the first who settled on this coastal stretch of the farm Strandfontein' (Fountain on the beach). There was a fountain that marked the central point of the town and provided drinking water to the community. The fountain was home to wild geese this is why the place later was known as 'Gansgat' (goose-hole), it was later changed to Gansbaai (Goose bay). Common names in Gansbaai are Wessels and other earlier settlers. The Fountain was recently restored and a plate next to it tells its story of the founding of Gansbaai. The geese have not returned yet. The coast from Gansbaai to De Kelders is dominated by caves, coves and limestone rock formations towering above the ocean. To the east it is less dramatic with endless white sand-beaches from Uilkraals estuary of Franskraal making it a hot-spot for birding. From Franskraal onwards to Pearly Beach the beaches are empty and a dream for those who want to take lonely walks along the beach. Some of the birds spotted are the rare and endangered Black Oyster Catcher. To be seen in the early mornings are the Cape fur seal or a Cape clawless otter.
