What is Mapsource and why do you need it for the T4A GPS Maps?
Mapsource is an application which enables you to view Garmin compatible maps on your PC, do route planning and transfer maps, waypoints, tracks and routes between your PC and your Garmin GPS device. T4A GPS Maps are Garmin compatible maps and you need Mapsource toHow to transfer the maps to your GPS device when you have a Macintosh: view it on your PC and to transfer it to your Garmin GPS device.

Where do you get Mapsource?
Mapsource is a Garmin application and is normally distributed with official Garmin products. In South Africa, a Garmin GPS are not distributed with a copy of Mapsource and you would need to buy a Garmin Map product in order to obtain a copy. In South Africa you can buy the Garmap Africa Series 2008 March Edition DVD. This is available from most GPS dealers throughout Southern Africa. When you install any of the map products on this DVD, it will first install Mapsource on your PC.

If you bought a Garmin GPS in South Africa it would most probably have been shipped with the Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps loaded either on the GPS or on a separate SD card. This entitles you to unlock your Garmap product on your PC as well. This process however is not required to use T4A GPS Maps on Mapsource. Also refer to http://www.garmap.co.za

ANSWERS BELOW

Q1: I successfully installed T4A Maps Pro but cannot open the IMG files in MapSource.
A: That is correct: To use T4A Maps in MapSource simply click the [view] menu and go to [select product].You can also select T4A Maps by using the pulldown menu in the view toolbar.

Q2: When I run the setup for T4A Maps I get an 1155 error.
A: Your Microsoft Installer is outdated. Download a recent version from the Microsoft web site first: Windows 95/98/ME (1670 kB) or Windows NT/2000 (1781 kB).

Q3: How do I select and upload maps to my device from MapSource?
A: See this useful tutorial: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/tutorial/mapsourceTutorial.exe  Also have a look at Q10 below.

Q4: How do I install Garmin USB drivers for Windows XP Pro 64 bit?
A: Follow the advice given is this document Garmin 64 bit USB drivers.pdf (412 kB) if you want to get your Garmin GPS working on your Windows XP Pro 64 bit installation.

Q5: Installing T4A Maps on Windows Vista puts MapSource out of action?
A: To solve problem in Vista, right-click on T4A installation file, go to Properties, go to Compatibility, click at bottom on Run this program as an administrator, click on Apply, click on OK and then install it.

Q6: I purchased the T4A pre-loaded SD card. When I inserted the SD card into the GPS, the GPS asked me whether I want to store extras onto the GPS. I said yes and removed the SD card from the GPS, however the maps don't display on the GPS when I remove the card. Why not?
A: The 'extras' that can be transferred to the GPS are POI (Points of Interest) files. The maps aren't transferred to the GPS, i.e. the SD card HAS to be inserted in the GPS when you want to use T4A.

Q7: I’m unable to search for addresses on my Quest when T4A and Garmap V1.5 are both loaded on it.
A: The Garmin Quest problem relates to the way the Quest firmware works. According to Avnic Trading who is the South Africa Garmin distributor, the Quest is designed to work the way it does, i.e. when loading more than one routable map to it the unit will not function correctly. The problem appears to be that, unlike on the other Garmin units, if you switch a mapping product off on the Quest the ’Search’ functionality goes haywire when two routable mapping products are loaded on the GPS.

T4A maps have never been routable before and since we introduced routable maps people using both T4A and other maps on their Quest started to experience this problem. After much testing was done T4A realised that if you do not activate Address or Intersection Search on the map compilation process, it actually solves the problem. So it seems as if the clash between the maps are related to these two functions.

T4A maps on the v8.02 CD was not compiled in this way and only maps from March 2008 onwards are compiled with Address and Intersection Search switched off. If you load these maps to your Quest together with other routable maps you do not experience any clashes. T4A maps do not contain address information so we do not require this functionality.

The clash on the Quest is also experienced when loading Garmin City Navigator South Africa together with Garmap Southern Africa Streetmaps, so the problem has nothing to do with Tracks4Africa maps.

Q8: I’m unable to locate any POI’s on T4A with the Garmin Colorado GPS.
A: The Colorado GPS only searches for POI’s within a certain radius of the current location. As a result if you are outside this radius (typically 1000km) then it will not find any POI’s for areas outside that radius. The way around this is to set the Colorado into Demo mode. Then set the New Location to a point closer to the area you want to search for POI’s. This is done by going to the Satellite Navigation Page, select Options, select New Location and it will bring up a world map. Select a New Location by pointing the arrow to a position on the map and select Enter. You will then be able to search for POI’s within the radius of the new location you have just entered.

Q9: My Garmin Colorado switches off when I go to the “Select Map” option to change between different mapsets. I am however able to load multiple mapsets to it.
A: This is a potential problem on some units and it has been addressed by Garmin in the unit firmware update v2.51. The Garmin website lists the potential shutdown when selecting maps with a large variety of maps loaded as being one of the issues fixed between v2.40 and v2.51 of the Colorado firmware. To correct the problem please download the latest unit software from the Garmin website.

Q10: How do I transfer map/s to my Garmin GPS or compatible device?
A: Firstly map/s are sent from MapSource to your GPS system (if you do not have Mapsource, please look for the free copy of MapSource on this Faq page at the top). When tranferring the map/s, Mapsource should be open, your GPS system switch on and plugged in. Each time a mapset is sent to a Garmin GPS the previously loaded maps are erased from the GPS. If your Garmap maps are on your sd card, transfer our maps to your internal memory and vice versa.

Step1: In Mapsource, go to view, switch to product and select the mapset you wish to send. The map will be visible in front of you, if not Zoom in and out of the map to find.

Step2: Now go to Tools(at the top of the toolbar) and select Map.

The Maptool is now selected, with this you can select the map/s you want to sent to your GPS. When you click on the map with the Maptool, the map will become pink(see below) if not Zoom into the map.

If you want to send more than one map to your GPS system then just repeat step 1 and 2.

To transfer the map/s to your GPS, select transfer on the toolbar, then select send to device.

The screen below should appear. Under "Device" you can either choose between the internal memory of the GPS which will be the name of your device [example Nuvi 500 (Unit ID 3523640917)] or the sd card (if you have one inserted in the GPS) which will be listed as Removable disk (F:/) on the drop down menu.

Your device should be listed there, ensure that maps are ticked. If you made routes or waypoints on the map/s, then this should also be ticked as well. Now click then on send. The map/s will be transferred to your device.

Q11: Are there compatibility issues between some versions of T4A and Mapsource v 6.15.11 and when loading the new Garmap Africa Series 2009 cd?
A: T4A versions 8.02 and earlier are incompatible with MapSource v 6.15.11 and are unable to run on it. This problem was caused by the new way MapSource renders the maps and this was fixed in T4A v8.06. This version 8.06 and all later releases will be compatible with MapSource v 6.15.11.

Users of earlier versions of T4A will have to use MapSource v6.13.7 until such time as they upgrade to a compatible release of T4A. MapSource v6.13.7 can be downloaded from the internet by clicking on the following link:

http://www.tramsoft.ch/gps/garmin_mapsource-software-upgrades_en.html#V06137

Once this has been installed earlier versions of T4A will function properly. T4A v8.06 is however still fully compatible with Mapsource v6.13.7 and earlier versions.

If you have installed the Garmap Africa Series 2009 cd and do have the v8.06 and v8.10 map on your PC which SHOULD work and still have problems opening Mapsource then you’ll have to check your computer’s hard drive to check whether you still have older mapsets on your PC.

To check whether you still have older maps, please follow these instructions:
Start – control Panel – add & remove Programs – now look for maps that say T4A Maps (map name) v8.02 and older – then remove.

The latest version of Mapsource is: 6.15.11
How to see which version of Mapsource you have: Open Mapsource, go to “Help” in the top menu, then click “About Mapsource”, you will see the version number in there.

Q12: I have T4A GPS Maps 8.06 on CD, can I upgrade MapSource to v 6.15.11?
A: T4A GPS Maps are compatible with the previous version of MapSource (version 6.13.7). A new version was released after our release of the CD and we have noticed an incompatibility with T4A GPS Maps - Traveller’s Africa CD 8.06 or earlier versions. We have released a patch to update the T4A GPS Maps 8.06 CD installation in order to be compatible with MapSource version 6.15.11. This patch is available for download from our website at the link provided below.

Please note:
This patch only applies to T4A GPS Maps - Traveller’s Africa CD 8.06. The maps currently sold on our web site are already compatible with MapSource 6.15.7. The patch will not work on earlier versions of our maps. You only need to run this patch if you want to use MapSource 6.15.7. You do not need this patch if you want to keep on using MapSource 6.13.

Download instructions:
1. Click on the download link and choose the ’Save’ option. Select a place on your computer to save the download file. Be sure that you can get back to this location after the download has completed.

Q21: Is it possible to download T4A maps onto my laptop if it has a GPS receiver connected?
A: Yes, you will need Garmin Mobile PC https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=13484&ra=true. Mapsource is also required to send the maps to Mobile PC. Only then can you download our map. (For more information on Mapsource and how to obtain it, please scroll right to the top of this FAQ page).

Q22: I have a Windows 7 operating system (PC). I have trouble viewing my T4A maps in Mapsource. After installing my Tracks4Africa map/s on my PC, Mapsource becomes very slow and sometimes it completely loses  the map. Only grid lines and waypoints are visible then.
A: If you have Mapsource v6.16.1 and older  on your Windows 7 PC you will experience this problem.
This problem was fixed with Mapsource v6.16.2. Please ensure that have the latest version of Mapsource from Garmin’s website http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 (to check which version of Mapsource you’re running, open Mapsource - go to HELP – ABOUT MAPSOURCE), i.e. v6.16.2 or newer.

Q23: How to select either the Topo/ Navigational map of RSA Free State Eastern Cape KZN, Namibia and RSA Western & Northern Cape in MapSource:
A:

This is only applicable to version9.10, 10.05 and version 10.10 maps. In Mapsource when selecting which map to send to your GPS (Topo/ Navigational) with your map tool, you will see there are two blocks over RSA Free State Eastern Cape KZN, Namibia and RSA Western & Northern Cape maps when moving the mouse cursor over these maps.

This is how you will select which map you want to send to your GPS device. (See below)

If you only transfer the Topo map to your device, (there will be no map available) you will only see TOPO lines on your device. In order to see all the detail (i.e. navigational detail) of the (Topo) map you have transfer both Topo & Navigational mapset (RSA Free State Eastern Cape KZN, Namibia and RSA Western & Northern Cape).

Q24: The Namibia / West- and Northern Cape map doesn't display properly on my GPS. I can see all the detail on Mapsource, but on the GPS only contour lines are displayed
A:

The Namibia map and the West- and Northern cape map consist of both a Navigational map and a TOPO map. This can be a bit confusing, because on Mapsource it displays as one map, however, when you send the map, you have to select both “map tiles”.

You will see that when the map is open, you have to make sure that you select either the TOPO map or the NAV map (or both if you want to make use of both). You will see the name of the map you selected on the left side of the screen in your Mapsource and below the picture of the map at the bottom of the screen when you scroll with the map toll over the map.

The screenshot below shows the Topographical (TOPO) map of Namibia selected:

The screenshot below shows the Navigational (NAV) Namibia map selected:

Once you have selected both tiles, TRANSFER and send to your device (GPS).

Q25:

Can I use a Tracks4Africa SD card built-in car navigation system?

A:

T4A GPS Maps are Garmin compatible.  If the unit in your car makes use of the Garmin software, i.e. Garmin Mobile XT, then T4A GPS maps would be compatible.

Tracks4Africa recently launched iGo 8 compatible maps for certain CASKA units. It has been tested on CASKA model numbers 0401E and CN136. The newer model CN138 and CN141 is now also supported with T4A iGo Primo Automotive Navigation that was recently released for this particular model.

Non-compatible systems that we know of:

  • Built-in Toyota system is not compatible.
  • Built-in Land Rover system is not compatible.

Q26: Is Tracks4Africa compatible with a Windows 7?
A:

Yes, Tracks4Arica maps are compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8 Operationg Systems.

Q27:

What does the below error message mean when I install my Tracks4africa maps on my Windows 7 PC.

A:

If tracks4africa maps are first download onto Windows XP or Windows Vista PC you will receive the above error message. When downloading a Tracks4Africa link from an online purchase, you have to ensure that you download and install it on your Windows 7 PC in order for it to work

Q28:

On my older version of T4A I could search for street names, but on the v11.05 when I search on my GPS under address, I get a message saying ‘no data available’.

A:

T4A maps are not street maps, i.e. you cannot search for a specific street address. However, on previous versions you could search for some streets (the ones that were labeled). That was changed on v11.05. After realizing that a lot of our customers use the map to search for street names, (most of the streets in Namibia are labeled with the street name) we changed the maps again to include the street search. Once again, only the streets that are labeled with the street name are searchable and you won’t be able to search for a specific street number.

If you have purchased the v11.05 map between May and June and you need the street search function, please e-mail [email protected]

Please note that you'll be able to search for streetnames that are labbeled on our current version 14.05 maps.

Q29:

I purchased the Tracks4Africa pre-loaded SD card v11.05, but on my Garmin Colorado I cannot view any photos when accessing the T4A guide (see http://tracks4africa.co.za/about/GPS_Travel_Guides/ for more information on the T4A guide). On my Nuvi the photos display fine. What is the problem?

A:

The Colorado series was specifically designed without that functionality and you will not be able to view photos on this unit.

Q30:

How do I transfer map/s to my Garmin GPS or compatible device using Garmin BaseCamp on your Windows PC?

A:

Maps are viewed in BaseCamp and then transferred via MapInstall from your PC to the GPS.

Step 1: To install BaseCamp on your PC, visit http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435 and follow the on screen instructions.

Step 2: To install MapInstall, visit http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291 and follow the on screen instructions.

You now have a legal working copy of Garmin BaseCamp and MapInstall.

If you already have BaseCamp on your PC, go to HELP – CHECK FOR SOFTWARE UPDATES to make sure you are using the latest version. The steps below are applicable to BaseCamp v3.3.3 (or later) and MapInstall v4.0.1 (or later).

When sending the map/s, MapInstall should be open and your GPS system switched on and plugged in. Each time a map set is sent to a Garmin GPS the previously loaded maps are erased from the GPS. If your Garmap maps are on your SD card, send your T4A maps to the internal memory on your device and vice versa.

To transfer maps to your device, open Mapinstall.

The device + SD card should be listed in one line. If you want to transfer maps to the internal memory of your device, make sure that no SD card is inserted in the device.

If you want to transfer maps to the SD card in your device, simply insert the SD card into the GPS.

For some older units the SD card and unit name will be listed separately. In that case, make sure you select the destination where you want to send the maps. Click on continue and select the maps you want to send:

If you are using a newer device, click on CUSTOMIZE to select the map(s) you want to send to your device.

Click on the map name of the map that you want to send to your device. Your map will be highlighted on the screen. Click on continue:

Click on install:

The following screen will appear:

To check whether the maps were successfully sent, switch on your Garmin GPS device, go to TOOLS – SETTINGS – MY MAPS and check whether T4A is listed (note steps to check whether the maps are loaded may vary depending on which GPS you’re using).

This can take a few minutes (note it shouldn’t take hours). When the installation is done, click FINISH.

 Q31:

Why are all Points of Interest (POI) not displaying on my T4A map on my Garmin Nuvi?

 A:

On the Garmin Nuvi, you have to zoom in to 80m to see POI display. This display level on Nuvi units can unfortunately not be changed as with some of the more advanced Garmin GPS units (such as the Garmin Montana, etc.)

The newer Nuvi units were purposely engineered to limit the amount of POIs that show on a given screen (to avoid cluttering the screen), so that even at 80m you won’t be able to see all POI. To view POI, either search for the point under ‘Where To’ on the main menu, or make a waypoint on the GPS or transfer a waypoint from Mapsource / Basecamp in order to highlight the point.

 Q32:

I have a 4GB SD card and transferref T4A to the SD card while it was inserted in the GPS, but the GPS won't read the maps. Why not?

 A:

Most Garmin GPS units don't 'like' SD cards that have a capacity of more than 2GB. For this very reason, the T4A pre-loaded SD card comes loaded on a 2GBmicro SD card with a standard adapter.

Q33:   Q: How do I uninstall previous versions of Tracks4Africa map/s on my Macintosh before installing the new version?
A:

      1. Click on Go on the top of your Toolbar.

      2. Double click on Applications.

      3. Look for the Garmin MapManager and double click on it to open.

      4. Garmin MapManager will now list all the maps install on your PC.

      5. Click on the map you wish to delete/uninstall from your PC to highlight.

      6. Now click on Map Actions this is the button in the bottom left-corner of MapManager and select delete.

You will now be successfully uninstalled from your Mac.

Q34:  I accidentially removed the maps on my Tracks4Africa SD card. How can I get the maps back on my PC and GPS unit?

 A:

There are three ways to reinstall the maps onto your PC and GPS unit.

Firstly, our Tracks4africa SD card contains the installation files for Windows and Mac. Explore the contents on the SD and look for either the PC (i.e. Windows) install files folder or the Mac Install files folder. The folder contains the installation file for your PC (.exe) or Mac (.tgz). Once the maps are installed on your PC successfully, you can transfer them from Mapsource/MapInstall to your GPS unit. Each time a mapset is sent to a Garmin GPS the previously loaded maps are erased from the GPS. If your Garmap maps are on your sd card, send our maps to your internal memory and vice versa.

If you have registered your SD card on our website, login to your member profile and click on your serial number under SD Card Registration. You will then be directed to another page where you can download the maps which you’ve registered. Select between Windows or Apple Mac and click on ‘get the file’. Once the maps are installed on your PC successfully, you can transfer them via Mapsource/MapInstall to your GPS unit. Each time a mapset is sent to a Garmin GPS the previously loaded maps are erased from the GPS. If your Garmap maps are on your sd card, send our maps to your internal memory and vice versa.

Contact us if you still having problems installing the maps from either your SD card or member profile.

Q35:

I have a windows 8 Operating system, when I download Tracks4africa maps from the online store I get an error message saying “Windows Protect your PC” (image below). What should I do?

 A:

The error you get below is just a security measure of the new Windows 8 OS.

Click on the “More info” and select Run Anyway.

You will get this user account control message, click yes and follow our on screen instructions to install the maps on your Windows 8 PC.

Q36:

I have a Mac with the operating system (OS) X Lion 10.07 and Lion 10.7.5, I’m unable to install Tracks4Africa maps on my PC?

A:

We have found that the OS X Lion 10.07 and Lion 10.7.5 is incompatible with our maps, in order to install the T4A maps on your system you will need to upgrade your OS to Mountain Lion.
