The Vanderkloof Dam lies in the Orange River roughly 180 km south of Bloemfontein. The dam was completed in 1977 and named the P.K. le Roux Dam, after a former Minister of Water Affairs. The name was later changed to Vanderkloof. The Vanderkloof Dam, fed by the Orange River, is about 130 km down-stream from the Gariep Dam. It is the second biggest dam in South Africa by volume (3 171 million cubic meters) with the highest dam wall in the country. It has a hydro power station, one of only two in South Africa. The Vanderkloof Dam provides irrigation water to about 100 000 hectares of agricultural land. You can fish and enjoy other water sports like boating and windsurfing at the dam.
