Mountain Pass Katbakkies Pass (Summit 1198m)

ID: w128022 View large map

Located in South Africa :: Western Cape (Cedarberg)
Category: Scenic Routes :: Mountain Pass

The decisively steep Katbakkies Pass traces over what was once an old sheep-trekking route over the mountain. It joins the Koue Bokkeveld with the Ceres Karoo. It was recently tarred and although fairly short, it has a serious average gradient of 1/12 which will tax many an underpowered vehicle and especially the two sections about quarter way up the ascent which measure out at UNDER 1:4! The pass is sometimes covered in snow during winter as the snow line of 1000m ASL is well below this pass's maximum altitude of 1200m. It's a narrow road so take it slowly and enjoy the spectacular barren landscape. (Source: Mountain Passes South Africa).

ROADS:
The Katbakkies Pass in the Cederberg area near Citrusdal is tarred as it is very steep. However, all the roads adjoining to the pass are gravel, but a good smooth road surface. (Feb 2018).

 Travel Tip!

4x4 not necessary but not advisable for a under-powered car with a trailer.
