Tradouws Pass is situated midway between Swellendam and Heidelberg and is one of 13 passes built by the engineer Sir Thomas Bain in the Southern Cape. It was opened in 1873 and the stone bridge, known as 'Lettie's Bridge' was washed away by floods in 1875. A white painted wooden bridge replaced it, and was known as 'Die Witbrug'. This bridge was kept in place as a national monument, but a concrete one was built for use in the 1960's. This throughway was originally discovered by the Khoisan who left galleries of rock paintings in the numerous caves along the way. It is believed that the name Tradau is derived from the Khoi words tra (woman) and dau (way through).
