Griekwastad ('Griqua City') started in 1801 as a London Missionary Society mission operated by William Anderson and Cornelius Kramer. From 1813 to 1871, the town and the area around it was known as Waterboer's Land. Before it was annexed into the Cape Colony, Griekwastad was the capital of the British Colony Griqualand West from 1873 to 1880, with its own flag and currency. The town has sheep farming, and semi-precious stones (tiger's eye and jasper) in the area.
