Douglas is situated near the confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers, and was founded in 1848 by the Reverend Isaac Hughes as a mission station on the farm Backhouse. In 1867 an agreement was signed to establish a town. The town was named after General Sir Robert Percy Douglas, Lieutenant Governor of the Cape Colony. Today, Douglas is divided in three sections - Bongani, Breipaal and Douglas.
