The town of Vredenburg is seen as the business hub for the many small towns of the West Coast. The town is situated north of Cape Town and is the administrative centre for the Saldanha Bay local Municipality. It was established in 1875 and was first named Twisfontein when two farmers fought about the only freshwater spring in the area. Legal action was taken and the name of the town was changes to Prosesfontein (lawsuit fountain) The Dutch Reformed church was later built and the town renamed Vredenburg, meaning (Peace town). The Langebaan Air force base is situated near Vredenburg, as well as the popular Fossil Park with a massive bear and short necked giraffes. Fish Factories are one of the main sources of employment in the area. During May and June Vredenburg and the surrounding coastline is filled with wild flowers creating a beautiful landscape of colour.
