Kuruman is known as the 'oasis of the Kalahari', but also 'the fountain of Christianity' in Africa due to the flowing springs of the Die Oog (The Eye) and its missionary history of the 'Moffatt Mission'. Die Oog provides the town with a permanent source of water, and Kuruman is also a noted Peace Corps outpost. Today, the surrounding mines offer employment to the town.
