'Die Hel' / 'The Hel', situated in the Gamkaskloof, is situated about 100 km's from Oudtshoorn, and runs as a 20km long valley. Archaeological evidence shows that the Khoisan first inhabited this area. 'Die Hel' was eventually discovered by a farmer searching for lost cattle in the 1800's. Various Afrikaans families settled in this fertile area, and lived, largely isolated from the outside world, for about 130 years. Today, 'Die Hel' can only be approached from Oudtshoorn or Prince Albert via the Swartberg Pass. The name 'Die Hel' (ie. 'The Hell') came about after monthly visits from a local stock inspector, who had to descend into this valley on a steep descent, known as the 'ladder', hence 'die hel' was coined.
It is an isolated valley in the Swartberg Mountains between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert, accessible via only one (rather dangerous) 4x4-only road, with a good driver and the vehicle should have good ground clearance. The valley is covered with dense riverine shrubs and thorn trees when descending. At the bottom of the Kloof the road winds through the dense riverine bush, historical houses, camping sites, caravan park, picnic sites, a school, cemetery and the only kiosk and restaurant.
