This is the remains of an old abandoned oil drilling rig which was operational in the late '60s and early 70's and erected by Ben du Preez and Jack Scott. They were sure there was oil but when they reached a depth of 1700 meters they realized there is no oil here. It was erected long before the National Park was proclaimed. Today, it provides a perfect nesting area for birds during the breeding season. .

“There used to be nesting Cape Cormorants and White breasted cormorants in the rusted remains of the oil rig, back in the '90, but I haven't seen those birds anymore for the past 20 years or so. My guess is that they have been scared off by the visitors' disturbance.” - Pierre CONSTANT, 2020/05/18
