Mvuu Camp is situated on the edge of a lagoon, off the Shire River. There is only one place to camp in Liwonde Park and that is at Mvuu Camp. All other camps have only lodging. The campsite at Mvuu Camp is situated behind the tented camp, with tap and braai facilities. Campers may participate in activities, use the pool, and book meals in advance. (Feb-18).

There are also large en-suite tents and a unique stone and thatch honeymoon suite, each with a private view of the lagoon.

Travelling Information

Self Drive Access :  Yes

ACCESS:
During the rainy season from December to April, the roads can be very difficult, a 4WD is then recommended. The cotton soil becomes impassable, so travelling to the lodge is only possible by boat from the western side of the Shire River(Ulongwe Rd). This means that you will have to leave your vehicle on the western side and stay in either Mvuu Lodge or tent camp. They do however guard the vehicles. If you do try and reach the lodge campsite and get stuck, Mvuu lodge will assist you at a fee, if you can reach them via phone. (Jan-13).

GAME VIEWING:
During November 2012 a visitor reported that the floodplains of the Shire river were filled with game and many newborns!

 Travel Tip!

Arrange Rhino Tracking with the rangers in the Rhino Boma.

“We camped here in November 2012 and really enjoyed it. The floodplains of the Shire river were filled with game, many whom have just given birth.Birds are plentiful and we saw the rare Whitebacked Nightheron, which also had chicks. One may make use of all facilities at the camp and the beautiful pool was a winner in the heat. We also did a most enjoyable boat trip. One can also do Rhino tracking with the rangers in the Rhino Boma. This is the only campsite in the park. The roads can become very difficult to traverse in the rainy season-December to April. ” - Mietsie Visser, 2013/01/14

“When we visited some years ago we were shown to a site behind the main lodge and allowed to camp there as this was, and still is, the only lodge in the park. Since then it appears to have gone upmarket and now offers this tented camp site.” - David Clack, 2009/02/09
