Ndola is a large city surrounded by copper mines - this is the commercial heart of the Copperbelt province. Besides the Bwana Mkubwa mine it also boasts an oil refinery, a cement factory and a lime factory.

Traveller Description

The Copperbelt Museum, on the corner of Buteko and Maina Soko Roads, depicts the history of mining in the copperbelt, as well as some cultural beliefs. A second museum, on the corner of Broadway and Arusha roads, displays items from the colonial days as well as interesting stories about the people from that time.

West of town is the Chichele Mofu Slave Tree, a pod mahogany or lucky bean tree (Afzelia quanzensis), known locally as a mupapa tree, where slaves were sold before the practice was banned in the 1900s. Just north of the Slave Tree is the Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial, this commemorates the spot where his plane crashed in September 1961. Hammarskjöld, a Swedish economist, was the United Nations secretary at the time and was en route to some peace negotiations during the Congo crisis. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously in 1961, having been nominated before his death. The circumstances of this plane crash have been the subject of ongoing controversy and a recent documentary at the time of writing.
