In 1905 the Jesuit Missionary, Father Joseph Moreau established a mission station in Chikuni, just east of Chisekesi. A few miles north the Seventh Day Adventists established the Rusungu Mission. A small village grew around the two mission stations and when the railways reached the village, the siding that was built here, was called Mission Siding. The village that grew around the siding was called Chisekesi, and the siding name was changed to Chisekesi siding.
When the building of the Lake Kariba dam wall commenced in the 1950’s, many of the Tonga people that lived in the Zambezi Valley was relocated to the town of Chisekesi.
There is a convenient fuel station in the village, but shopping is limited to a small kuka shop. The Seventh Day Adventists run the Rusunga University just north of Chisekesi, while the Charles Lwanga College of Education is still run by the Jesuits and provides a diploma in teaching, in order to try and improve education in Zambia.
