Surrounded by cattle and crop farms, Mkushi is a busy town and the business centre of this agricultural district. It’s home to around 130 000 people. The town lies on the Great North Road and is one of the stops on the TAZARA railway between Kapiri Moshi and Dar-Es-Salaam.
Traveller DescriptionSome 40 kilometres north of Mkushi you’ll find the very remote but pretty Changwena Falls on the river of the same name. The track from Mkushi to the falls runs through the North Swaka Forest, an area which offers good birding. There’s a basic campsite at the falls - no facilities.

Forest Inn (30 km west of Mkushi on the T2 highway) offers shady camping and comfortable chalets in a 160-hectare indigenous forest. Birders should be on the lookout for the Chestnut Mantled Sparrow Weaver and Boehm’s Flycatcher among the more common drongos and hoopoos.
