Booking

About 40 km south of Lusaka you’ll find Kafue, a town with more than 60 000 residents. It lies wedged between the Kafue River in the south, the granite hills of Zambia’s Central Plateau to the north, the floodplains of the Kafue Flats to the west and Kafue Gorge to the east. At this point, the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) railway line as well as the Great North Road (T1) cross the Kafue River, squeezing through the gap between floodplain and gorge.

Commercial farms stretch from town into the Kafue Flats and Kafue Fisheries process more than 700 tons of tilapia every year. Many people are employed by these two industries as well as the Kafue Gorge Upper Power Station (30 km to the east) and the Universal Mining Company factory which manufactures iron and steel products from Zambian raw materials.

Traveller Description

Besides shopping and refueling, this town doesn’t have much to offer tourists. The only nearby attraction is boat cruises on the Kafue River, 10 km to the south of town.

The Munali Hills National Monument is located on the T1 between Kafue and Livingstone, east of Mazabuka, and marks the spot where David Livingstone passed through the hills from the Kafue Flats to reach the high plateau around Lusaka.
