A large town of approximately 65 000 people, Solwezi is the capital of the North-Western Province of Zambia. Its industry is centred around the nearby Kansanshi Copper Mine, the eighth largest copper mine in the world.
Traveller DescriptionApproximately three kilometres south of Solwezi, you’ll find the Kifubwa (aka Chifubwa) Stream Rock Shelter, a national monument. It was discovered by archaeologist, Desmond Clark who excavated the cave in 1961, finding rock paintings which were quite unique. Not only are they the only etchings found in Zambia but they are painted. He also discovered tools from the Late Stone Age. Approximately 30 km southwest of Solwezi, you’ll find Mutanda Falls; this is more a series of small rapids than an actual waterfall but it nevertheless provides a scenic setting for a picnic on the riverbanks.
