When copper deposits were discovered in the region, the British established the Kasempa district in 1902. They named the district and town after the chief of the Kaonda tribe resident in the region. Today the town has approximately 12 000 residents.
Traveller DescriptionThe town developed on the banks of the Lufupa River and is prettily surrounded by rolling green hills. One such hill, Kamusongolwa Kopje northwest of town, was excavated by archaeologists in 1962, and approximately 100 000 pieces dating back to the Late Iron Age, was discovered, including a copper currency bar.
