ID: w147396 View large map

Located in Zambia :: Great North
Category: Camping :: Camping

Guests should first report to the Main camp. A Private Conservancy of about 10,000ha owned and run by Lari and Mike Merrett. It was chosen for its majestic granite inselbergs, pristine streams with picturesque waterfalls and untouched wetlands and Miombo woodland. The Kankonde campsite is located 11km from main camp, therefore, you need to be self-sufficient. The camp offers its own personal barbeque/braai with picnic table & benches. Wood is complimentary, please use wisely. Wash hand basins, hot showers, toilet facilities with views good for birders and dish wash-up area are shared and central to all sites.

It is an IBA 'Important Bird Area' under the Birdlife International Programme with a bird list of 319 species to date. Other facilities consist of a four cottage full catering lodge and a well equipped main campsite, both situated on rocks overlooking surrounding valleys and a self-catering 'fly camp' 11km from the main camp on the Mutinondo River. Activities include horseback riding, quiet canoeing, hiking, birdwatching, swimming, rock art sites, wild flowers and lots of peace and quiet. Large variety of wildlife live in the area, from Roan and Sable Antelope to Aardvark and otters, but are difficult to spot. Jewellery designed and made on site is available from Lari's craft shop.
