With a population of almost 12 000, Gumare is the largest village in the Okavango Panhandle. A school and Primary Hospital is catering to the villages in the surrounding areas.

Due to the location of the village in the catchment area of the Okavango Delta, a large number of wild edible plants are gathered and used in the preparation of traditional dishes and beverages.

Traveller Description

Gumare is situated on the Okavango River, roughly halfway between Maun and Shakawe; it's a convenient refuelling and shopping point for visitors heading to one of the lodges on the river.

 Travel Tip!

Fuel availability at Shakawe and Sehithwa is unreliable, and travellers are advised to refuel at Gumare if they're running low. Take care, as the A35 between Gumare and Shakawe is notoriously bad. If peace and tranquillity is your thing, Gidichaa Tented Camp, approximately 45km west of Gumare, is the place to relax for a few days. It's also a convenient stopover if you're en route to Dobe Border Post between Namibia and Botswana.
