In the early 1970s, large diamond deposits were found in Botswana to the extent that mining makes up a quarter of Botswana’s GDP (gross domestic product), followed by beef exports to the EU and tourism.
The Orapa Mine outside Letlhakane was opened in 1972, followed shortly by the Letlhakane Mine and later the Damtshaa Mine. These three mines surround the town of Letlhakane. Together with the Jwaneng Mine, one of the largest diamond mines in the world, they have made Botswana the world’s second-largest diamond producer, supplying about 21% of the world’s diamonds. In 2022 24.5 million carats were mined in Botswana. Debswana, a joint venture between the Botswana government and the De Beers mining company of South Africa, operates all four mines.
