Category: Attraction :: Interesting Places

Dead Tree Island is situated near Xakanaxa within the Moremi Wildlife Reserve in the Okavango Delta. The Island was named because of a number of skeletal Mopane trees surrounding the pan of open water. The trees were drowned and they died, when the channel changed. The Mopane trees are resistance to termites and they are partly submerged in water hence they are decomposing very slowly. Animals can also be spotted here. An entrance fee is payable to enter the Moremi Game Reserve in order to see the Dead Tree Island. Fees are payable in advance at the central pay points. For more information contact the Parks and Reservations Office.
