Whittlesea is part of the Hewu Regions, and was established in 1847 to be a military outpost that would protect the farmers. For historical enthusiasts the ruins of some of the old buildings still exist. Whittlesea has a population of 80 000, with many informal housing areas. The dam outside the town, the Waterdown Dam, was built to provide water to the nearby town of Queenstown.
