Matatiele is a Sotho word based on the Sesotho phrase “matata aile” meaning “the ducks have gone”or "the ducks have flown."The town is within the Matatiele local municipality and is conveniently on the R56 Route between Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal and Middelburg in the Eastern Cape. Surrounded by beautiful scenery of mountainous foot -hills, rural villages, sparkling streams etc.
