“Allanridge was established as a development area in the Free State goldfields in 1947. It was named after Allan Roberts whose continued exploration led to the establishment of the Freestate Goldfields. The Loraine Gold Mines sank the first shafts in the area and Allanridge town was built to house the gold mining community. It remained a bustling little town until the end 1980s when production started decreasing The Lorraine mine was closed in August 1998 and since then the town has deteriorated rapidly and is becoming a lawless squatter camp. The dwindling number of law-abiding citizens are fighting a losing battle to provide services to the town.” - Chris Smit, 2024/05/01
