Kariega (Uitenhage) was formerly a farming community and it is situated on the banks of the Swartkops river but gradually developed into a thriving industrial and commercial area. The town is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Region of Eastern Cape. Notable industries are the Volkswagen factory one of the biggest car manufacturing factory as well as the Goodhope tyres.
