Lindley on the Vals River is a small town 190 km south of Johannesburg in Free State province of South Africa. It was laid out in 1875 on the farm Brandhoek and proclaimed a town in 1878 and named after Daniel Lindley, an American Presbyterian minister who was the first ordained minister to the Voortrekkers in Natal. Tourist attractions in Lindley include: A British memorial in the local cemetery to British soldiers who died at Yeomanry Hills during the siege of Lindley on 31 May 1900, Prehistoric stone huts of the original inhabitants of the area. A miniature replica of the Dutch Reformed Church that was erected in 1928 in memory of those who died during the Anglo-Boer War. The farm Doornkloof of famous Voortrekker leader, Sarel Cilliers, is now the national headquarters of the Voortrekkers youth movement. Danie Craven, the famous Springbok Rugby Union player, administrator and coach was born in this town on 11 October 1910. The district is known for bird watching and a total of 108 species have been spotted there. There are ample hunting, horse riding, hiking, quad biking, angling and other outdoor facilities for the visitor. Maize, wheat, potatoes, dairy and beef farming is practiced in the district. Lindley, together with its neighbouring towns of Reitz, Petrus Steyn and Arlington form the Nketoana Municipality.
