Frankfort is a small farming town on the banks of the Wilge River about 130 km south of Johannesburg, in the Free State province of South Africa. The town originated on the farm Roodepoort in 1869, and was named Frankfurt (After Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany). The town received municipality status in 1896. The main street is 'Brand Street', named after the 4th president of the Orange Free State, Sir Johannes Brand. He visited the town during 1883, and laid the corner stone of the Dutch Reformed Church. This church was burnt down by the British troops during the Anglo-Boer War. The old clock in the facade of the Church, survived and is now a popular landmark. After the war it was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1918. Frankfort is now the capital town of the Mafube Municipality which includes Villiers, Cornelia and Tweeling as well as a rural area consisting mainly of commercial agriculture. There are milling companies in the town and a dairy milk production company as well. For more information about the town contact the tourism bureau in the town. (Jun-15).
