Cornelia on the Skoonspruit (A tributary to the Vaal River) is a small town 140 km south-east of Johannesburg in the Free State province of South Africa. In 1894 it was named after Cornelia Mulder, the second wife of former Free State President Francis William Reitz. The village was proclaimed in 1917 and became a municipality in 1923 It is best known for the discovery fossils of a large horse-like mammal on the farm Uitzoek in 1955. 1 Million year old stone artefacts and tools have also been found in the area.
