Brandfort, now called Winnie Mandela, is a town part of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality in Free State Province. The town history dates back in 1866 when it was a church centre belonging to Jacobus van Zijl who stayed at farm Keerom. Brandfort means "burning fort." The town was the first location where the first aeroplane in Africa was built. Political history also states that a concentration camp was also built in this town where women and children were imprisoned during the Anglo-Boer war. The first wife to Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela was exiled in the town and former Prime Minister H.F. Verwoerd matriculated here. Farming is the backbone of this town's economy with maize and wool production leading. They also practice cattle and sheep rearing.
