Winterton is a small town situated on the foot of the Drakensberg Mountain and right on the banks of the Tugela River. The town was founded in 1905 as Springfield when the Natal government built a weir across the Little Tugela River. The town later changed its name to Winterton in honor of the secretary for agriculture, HD Winter. This is one of South Africa typical rural town with farming of maize, wheat and beef production as the major economic drive. This area is well known for several peaks and passes.
