Umkomaas, on the banks of the Mkomazi River, lies. 50 kms south of Durban on the KZN coast of South Africa. The Zulu name Umkomanzi, was given by King Shaka Zulu in 1928 during one of his royal processions with his 'Impi' (warriors). During a hunting expedition, he saw a number of cow whales and calves which were basking in the shallows a short distance out to sea from the river mouth. (uMkhomazi means the place of the Cow Whales) The town of Umkomaas with its spectacular sea views, developed on a hill at the river's southern bank and became a popular holiday destination. Umkomaas is the sleepy sea side / riverside town which serves as the gateway to the famous Aliwal Shoal.
