Villiers on the Vaal River lies in the Free State province of South Africa about 110 km south-east of Johannesburg. The town was laid out in 1882 on portions of the farms Grootdraai and Pearson Valley, owned by Lourens de Villiers. It became a municipality in 1917 and was named after the owner of the farms. The main economic activities of the district include cattle and maize farming. The proximity to the Vaal River has led to holiday resorts being developed around the town.
