Moolmanshoek is a private nature reserve of 3 500 hectares private mountain reserve in the Witteberg Mountains and is part of the Korannaberg region. Strict environmental practices are enforced, making this a very eco-friendly destination.
A National Heritage Site, Moolmanshoek offers four challenging trails - Langesnek, Visierskerf/Kloof, Kiepersol Garden and Suikerhoek - in some of the most scenically-lush parts of the country. It's another favourite of experienced 4x4 drivers who know that it offers a little bit of something for everyone.
What makes this a special venue is the attitude of owner Willie Nel who is committed to making this a great nature experience. The 4x4 trails act as gateways to experiencing the area. The first two are easier, allowing less-experienced drivers the chance to take part and enjoy the area.
The latter are more technical, requiring off-road skills and low range. Every trail is guided, regardless of grading, and the guiding is usually by men on horseback. Langesnek is a 10-km, 2-3-hour trail. It starts off traversing a wetland area and grasslands.
Then you tackle rock plates leading through an almost lunar landscape. Here you can pit your skills against the solid rock in preparation for the extremely steep descent, leading back to the flatter areas. Visierskerf/Kloof is a 20-km, 4-5-hour trail passing under the Witteberg overhang.
The return route travels through some interesting kloofs before returning to base camp. It's the best for game-viewing and is a bird-watcher's paradise. Kiepersol Garden is an 8-km 2-3-hour track to its namesake. It's a tricky drive across sandstone plates, that is arduous for both vehicle and driver.
Suikerhoek is a 7-km, 2-hour trip organised on request for the more experienced groups. Moolmanshoek boasts a four-star Sandstone Lodge with 15 en-suite bedrooms, good views and a restaurant. Most suites have fireplaces or Queen Ann stoves. There are also a pool room, honesty bar, library and a sun room for lodge guests. There are also conference facilities available.
Some of the adventurous activities includes fishing, abseiling, hiking, horse - riding, mountain biking, a high-ropes course, meerkat experience and game viewing.(Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).
