Nakuru means 'Dust or Dusty Place' in the Maasai language, and the Lake is close to Nakuru Town. Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes, protected under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands, and situated in the Lake Nakuru National Park which was established in 1961. The algae in the lake attracts a large quantity of flamingos. The National Park includes the lake, the surrounding mountainous vicinity, and a large part of the savannahs. (Updated Jun-14).
