Lake Manyara National Park is located both in Arusha Region and Manyara Region in the north of Tanzania. It stretches 50km along the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. The park is 330 sq km of which up to 200 sq km is lake when water levels are high. There is over 400 species of birds recorded which makes Manyara a great introduction to Tanzania birdlife. The highlight of the birdlife is the thousands of pink-hued flamingos and other large water birds such as pelicans, cormorants and storks. Wildlife includes buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, giraffes, elephants, Kirk’s dik-dik and the legendary tree-climbing lions more to the inland. (Updated July-2015)
