Sadaani National Park is located in the centre of the historic triangle of Bagamoyo, Pangani and Zanzibar. It is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the sea. The national park was proclaimed to protect the unique coastal sand forest area and though not in huge numbers also boasts a variety of game including lion.
Relics of a long trading and cultural history can be identified, with a keen eye, around current small settlements and even within the Simply Saadani Camp. The coastal and river location features mangrove and salt flats.
Many villages exist around the boundaries of the park. Saadani village once was an important harbour-town and slave trading centre in east Africa. Now it is a small Swahili fishing village with about 800 inhabitants whose livelihood is mostly fishing. Other villages adjacent to the park make their living through farming, especially coconut growing.
