Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is a 4560ha reserve situated in the Ezulwini Valley (Valley of Heavens) between Mbabane and Manzini. Mlilwane means 'Little Fire' in siSwati, derived from the multitude of fires started by lightning strikes on Mlilwane Hill.
The sanctuary, which is under patronage of King Mswati III, was established in 1964 and is Swaziland’s oldest game reserve. Accommodation options include camping, a backpackers’ hostel, huts and self-catering units. As it is not home to the Big Five, visitors can bike, walk or ride on horseback close to zebra, wildebeest, antelope, hippos and crocodile. Activities like tribal dancing and game viewing make it a particularly popular attraction among foreign tourist groups. Visitors particularly enjoy the warthogs that sleep around the communal fire at night and antelope like Nyala that wonders around camp.
The initial check-in is before 6pm, but otherwise there is 24/7 gate access. (Aug 2016)
