This small village between Goageb and Walvis Bay is the site of one of Namibia’s oldest European settlements. Back in 1814, the London Missionary Society sent a German missionary, one Reverend Heinrich Schmelen, to the area to minister to the Kai/khauan.
His house, the Schmelenhaus, was built on his arrival and is currently a national monument and a small museum. Unfortunately for Schmelen, his ministries met with few conversions and he departed in despair some eight years on.
With this and other stories to tell, Bethanie is one for the history buffs.
While it’s clear that Bethanie has fair tourist potential, it remains more a farming town, not that this doesn’t allow it a certain charm. Even though this is a small town, you’ll find most basic services here.
