THIS SMALL VILLAGE ON THE ROAD between Goageb and Walvis Bay is the site of one Namibia’s oldest European settlements. Back in 1814, the London Missionary Society sent a German missionary, one Reverend Heinrich Schmelen, to the area to minister to the Kai/khauan.
His house, the Schmelenhaus, was built on his arrival - it’s currently a national monument and a small museum. Unfortunately for Schmelen, his ministries met with few conversions and he departed in despair some eight years on.
With this and other stories to tell, Bethanie is one for the history buffs.
