Some 1 200km from the nation’s capital and a mere half a kilometre from the Zambian border, you’ll find Katima Mulilo, Namibia’s most easterly town of any size. Often referred to simply as Katima, this is the capital of the Zambezi region (Caprivi Strip) and it’s located on the Zambezi River’s banks - the river forms the border with Zambia at this spot. Since the opening of the Katima Mulilo Bridge in 2004, which connects the Zambian Copperbelt with the Namibian deep sea harbour at Walvis Bay, Katima Mulilo has enjoyed much growth.
Located near the point where five countries meet, Katima Mulilo is home to many cultures and languages. And being an important town on an important trade route (linking the west coast of
Africa to the interior), Katima offers all the facilities and services that an overlander might need.
At the most easterly tip of the Zambezi region you'll find Impalila Island. It’s
formed by the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers to the north and south respectively, and the Kasai Channel to the west. Its name means 'the faraway place'. Once a military base for
the South African Defence Force, Impalila Island now forms part of the Impalila Conservancy and is home to the Lozi tribe. Although part of Namibia, access to the island's lodges is by
plane, or boat from Botswana’s Kasane Immigration Office. There is no vehicular access to this area.
