Aus is a tranquil desert town some 125km east of Lüderitz on the B4 which runs between Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop. The
railway service used to run between the two towns but the train from Keetmanshoop now terminates at Aus. The village
was formerly the site of a prisoner-of-war camp established by the South African army in 1915 to house German
Schutztruppe captured during the First World War. The inmates initially lived in tents but later built brick houses.
The number of prisoners reached 1 500 but by May 1919 the last inmates left and the camp closed. Today a plaque marks the
site and some of the houses have been reconstructed. There is a Commonwealth gravesite just north of Aus.
What makes this cemetery unusual is that both German and Allied forces rest here together, most were killed by the
Spanish flu in 1918.
Aus is the ideal stopover if you’re on your way to Lüderitz from Keetmanshoop. It's a small town but it has all the basic necessities travellers might need, as well as good accommodation. Here you can soak up the peace and quiet of the Namib Desert and the magnificence of the Aus Mountains. The climate is usually hot and arid but snow has been recorded in winter. The biggest attraction is without a doubt the feral horses which can be sighted at the nearby Garub Pan. The Prisoner of War Camp and Commonwealth War Graves are also worth a visit.
