Sesfontein's name is derived from the six fountains located in the vicinity. A well-known landmark is the old German
fort, Fort Sesfontein, which has graves from the First World War. The fort's many palm trees were planted by the German
police officers who were stationed here to combat weapon smuggling as well as elephant and rhino poaching. Today the fort is
a historical monument which has been rebuilt and equipped to accommodate tourists.
The area around Sesfontein and Puros is very popular because of the fountains, hot springs and beautiful landscape. There are many off-road riverbed trails which are often frequented by desert elephants. Lion still roam the area along with other game. Spoil yourself with a swim in the Ongongo Hot Spring, 27km east of Sesfontein. After a few days’ hard travelling the lukewarm water which cascades over a waterfall into a crystal-clear pool will invigorate you. Although it's possible to reach the spring with a sedan vehicle with high clearance, a 4x4 is
recommended as the 6km off-road track from Warmquelle is rough and very rocky in parts, sandy in others, and at one point you have to cross a dry riverbed.
Visit the Khowarib traditional Himba village. They will allow you to take photos for a set fee.

ROAD INFO:
If you want to traverse Robbies Pass to Kaoko Otavi to visit the Dorsland Trekker remains, you should budget 5 to 6 hours travel time as the drive is difficult with extremely slow rock-crawling.
The dry riverbeds can become very wet and muddy during the rainy season and extremely dusty during the dry season. As you get into the dry Hoanib Riverbed from Sesfontein, make sure all your windows are closed against the penetrating powder dust. On the popular Hoarusib Riverbed trail, you should stay on the main tracks because there are some spots with deep soft mud. On both tracks you can expect very deep sand, so you must lower your tyre pressures. Visiting here in a single vehicle is very risky unless you are an experienced off-road driver with good recovery gear.
“The Khoikhoi name of Sesfontein is 'Nanious'. It means ‘six fountains’, so that the Afrikaans name is a direct translation.” - Chris Smit, 2024/09/22
