Waterval Boven ('above the waterfall') is a small town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The village of Waterval Boven on the fringe of the Drakensberg Mountain escarpment, lies on the railway line between Pretoria and Maputo, about 230 km east of Johannesburg. The railway from Komatipoort to Pretoria reached Waterval Boven in March 1894. In order to establish a supply depot, the Transvaal Republic acquired about 78 ha of the farm Doornhoek, lying on either side of the line. This area was named Waterval Boven which is the Dutch for Above Waterfall. (The Elands River Falls) It has many historical sites like the old Railway Tunnel and buildings including President Paul Kruger's last official residence where he lived in 1900 before going into exile in Europe. The Elands River Waterfall is visible from the mouth of the old Railway Tunnel.
