Nelspruit is well known for the production of citrus fruits, hence is the home for the citrus headquarters. The development of the town began when President Paul Kruger built a railway line in 1891 from Komatipoort and Delagoa (Maputo) Bay and named a railway station Nelspruit. Timber production, cattle ranching and citrus fruits production, tobacco and pecan nuts are some of the major farming activities performed.

The Kruger National Park Airport (25km or 30 minutes away) receives scheduled commercial flights, and the Nelspruit Airstrip does not. Car rental services are available at the Kruger national park airport.

Due to a lack of funds, the building of the railway line was stopped for a year and the railhead developed into a small settlement.
