Brits was founded in 1906 as the Brits Railway Station on the Roode Kopjes farm, which was owned by Johan Nicolaas Brits. Soon after a steam driven roller mill, post office and police station followed, and in 1923 the area was legally proclaimed a township. Originally Brits was an agricultural town, but has grown into various industries, including platinum mining.
