Mekele is the capital of the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is a historical town as it was the capital of Yohannes IV, Kind of Kings of Ethiopia in the late nineteenth century. Today Mekele is one of the biggest and most modern towns in Ethiopia. It is a cultural and economical hub and a tourist springboard. Many tourists fly to Mekele from Addis Ababa and use it as a base from where to explore the rock-hewn churches of the Tigray region or the astonishing Danakil Depression. The town offers a variety of accommodation, from basic to upmarket, and all amenities tourists can possibly need. It is not a particularly beautiful town, but very convenient and easier to get by than most other Ethiopian town.
