ID: w186871 View large map

Located in South Africa :: Mpumalanga
Category: Activity :: 4WD-Trail

There are various trails, 100km in total, and would take 6 - 7 hours per day to complete, and anything from 1 to 5 days. Trails are suitable for 4X2 vehicles with diff lock, suitable for soft roader (vehicle without low range), low range gears are required to complete the trails, vehicle needs good ground clearance, are self-drive trails, a guide must accompany drivers, rescue services are available, GPS waypoints are available, quad bikes are welcome, camping facilities and covered accommodation is available, food/catering is available or there is a shop with supplies, the trails have shade and swimming. Mac Mac is undeniably one of the most beautiful trails in the country. Operated from Mac Mac Forest Retreat in the middle of the Komatiland Forest Conservancy, the Summit Route is more a network of tracks twining through a 770-km2 concession of delicate biosphere than a single trail. The trail can be started from various points and altered according to individual requirements. Options vary from one to five days.

On a basic tour, you can expect to be entombed within the enormous Komatiland forest plantations, awed by the spectacular Blyde Falls, spat out onto the Hartebeesvlakte, humbled by the Mauchsberg and silenced by the Blyde River Canyon. From mountain peaks, through sub-tropical forests to canyon floors, Mac Mac is primarily a journey of the senses into a world of lush green undergrowth, grand cliffs and misty chasms. Chances of spotting eland, blesbok, bushbuck, zebra, grey reedbuck, oribi, jackal and birds of prey are excellent.

You don't go to Mac Mac for the trail, you go for the environment and the experience. Overnight facilities are interspersed throughout the forest along the length of the trail. The two-day trail includes two nights at Mac Mac Forest Retreat, while the three-day trail starts there and then offers camping for the other two nights. Activities includes gold panning, archery, quad biking and canoeing.(Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).
